Does Battery Health Affect iPhone Resale Value?

September 7, 2026
Short answer: yes, but for most iPhones it matters less than people assume.
What the number actually tells a buyer
When we quote an iPhone, battery health is one of the first things we check, sitting in Settings under Battery Health & Charging. What we're really reading isn't the percentage itself. It's a single question: how soon will this phone need a new battery? That's the cost we're pricing in, and it's why the number carries less weight than the drama around it suggests.
Why 80% is the line that matters
Apple treats 80% as the point where a battery is worth servicing. Above that, most phones are still doing their job, and the effect on value is small. A phone at 91% and one at 98% will almost always get the same offer, because to the next owner they behave identically. The real drop-off starts once you fall under 80%, because now a replacement is on the horizon and whoever buys the phone is factoring in that expense.
Why it costs more on newer iPhones
Where this gets expensive is on higher-end and recent models. A worn battery on a two-generation-old base model is a rounding error. The same wear on a current Pro model is a bigger dollar figure, simply because there's more value in the phone for that deduction to come out of. The percentage might be identical. The amount it costs you is not.
You can't raise the number before selling
Battery health only moves one direction, so there's nothing to chase here. Good charging habits slow future wear, but nothing reverses what's already there.
Should you replace the battery first?
The one decision worth thinking through. If you're moving a recent, high-value iPhone that's dropped below 80%, an official replacement can occasionally pay for itself by removing the buyer's main objection. On an older or mid-range phone, it rarely does. You'll usually come out ahead being upfront about the number and letting the price reflect it. Honesty works in your favor anyway, since we check it regardless.
One free tip before you send it in
Charge the phone past 50% before shipping. A device that arrives dead slows down grading, and slow grading helps no one.
